Our Story
GI Sykes Ltd is a professional, reliable, and honest building, roofing, on-site spraying and painting contractor, proud to be your trusted builders in Birmingham. We offer a nationwide service for commercial, industrial, and residential clients throughout the UK.
Founded in the 1940’s by Mr R E Sykes, GI Sykes started its life as a painting and decorating contractor. In the 1950s, Mr Gary Sykes took over the management of the company and continued to grow the business on the core values of honesty, integrity and high standards.
In 1965, GI Sykes Ltd was incorporated and today we’re proud to be a fourth-generation family-owned and operated contracting business.
In 1997 Mr Gary Sykes retired, leaving his sons Richard and Jason Sykes to take over. Since then, the company has continued to thrive, with over 65 employees and a large client base throughout all industrial, commercial and residential sectors.
Our flexible approach to the contracting and construction industry has allowed us to constantly evolve and diversify to always meet our client’s ever-changing needs.
We’re proud to be a family business, with three generations working within the firm, serving as trusted builders in Birmingham. We take pride in our work, committed to our company values, and believe that following these maintains a strong relationship between us and our clients.

As a fourth-generation, family-run business, we know that our people are the key to providing excellent service to our clients. We have a team of 65 skilled and qualified contract managers and tradesmen, all employed by us to ensure consistent standards and high-quality workmanship on every project.
Every member of our team, dedicated builders in Birmingham, is committed to excellence and will go above and beyond to deliver your project on time and to the highest standards.
Richard Sykes
Richard joined the family business shortly after leaving college, working his way up through the business to his current position of Managing Director. His expertise in managing clients, projects and staff has enabled GI Sykes to grow into the strong, customer-focused company that it is today.
In his spare time, you’ll find Richard racing through the forests and along country roads as he competes in the British Rally Championship in his Citroen C2R2 Max rally car. He was British Rally Champion in 2012 and came runner up in 2013 and 2014. Claim to fame - He was crowned Stourbridge Sports Personality of the year in 2012.
Jason Sykes
Jason also joined the family business shortly after leaving school and has worked his way up through the business. Jason looks after the building services side of the business. His invaluable experience in managing clients, projects and staff has been a key influencing factor in the impressive growth GI Sykes has been able to achieve.
A keen rugby player, Jason plays for Stourbridge Rugby Club Grasshoppers team. He can normally be found at the bottom of a ruck. His passion on the pitch has earned him the nickname Syko.
Christopher Weaver - Financial Director
Chris joined GI Sykes in 1984 as the financial director to support the growth of the business. He is an avid ice hockey fan and likes to cheer on the local Midland ice hockey team, Coventry Blaze.
Daniel Westbury - Quantity Surveyor
Dan has been with GI Sykes since 2013 and has brought with him over 9 years of experience within the construction industry, since achieving his BSc in Quantity Surveying. Dan is a West Bromwich Albion fan and enjoys attending matches as often as possible.
Alison Rowbottom
Alison joined in June 2015. She enjoys her role as Accounts and Payroll Clerk, 3 days per week.
Trish Rutter – Health and Safety Co-Ordinator
Employed at G I Sykes since 1st August 2017
Current roles are Health and Safety within the business, site inspections, training needs of the employees, completing quotes for Colour my windows and setting up works to be completed, ordering materials/products. Liaising with tenants and clients , also working together with Richard and Jason Sykes to ensure the smooth running of the contracts ensuring best practice on site.
She is working towards Grad IOSH Status which will be completed in April 2021,
Her interests are the theatre, eating out and keeping fit, running being my favourite
Victoria Weaver
Victoria started working for GI Sykes in September 2020 as an office administrator. She is responsible for meeting any visitors, taking in any deliveries and generating the information required for all new quotes received from both existing and new client.
In her spare time, she plays ice hockey for Coventry Phoenix.
