Project Brief
Borough of Telford & Wrekin Council commissioned improvement works at Lawley Primary School to create a new nursery provision within the existing school building and create a new classroom within the adjacent demountable building.
The project formed part of a national £37 million Government-funded initiative supporting new nursery places across 300 schools in the UK.
The aim was to remodel internal teaching spaces, enhance accessibility, install suitable nursery standard facilities, and create a high quality external play environment to support early years development.
What we did
Internal Alterations
Extensive internal modifications were undertaken across multiple areas of the school, including the classrooms, library, staff room, toilets and the demountable building.
This included:
- Removal of internal walls, partitions, bookcases and redundant fittings to reconfigure the layout for nursery use.
- Installation of new nursery-appropriate doors, including powder‑coated aluminium external doors and 30-minute internal fire doors matching, fitted with finger guards and safety glazing in accordance with Approved Document K.
- Construction of a new stud partition walls to form reconfigure spaces in the staffroom
- Creation of a new baby changing room, including new sink, baby change table, ventilation system, vinyl flooring, lighting and a barn‑style stable door.
- Replacement of sliding doors with traditional swing doors to meet safeguarding and operational requirements.
- Installation of new floor finishes, including Polysafe Mosaic vinyl and Burmatex carpet tiles with all joints welded and threshold details completed to manufacturer standards.
- Redecoration of walls, woodwork and metalwork throughout, finished with acrylic eggshell and water‑based gloss.
- Electrical alterations including provision of small power and lighting to meet classroom Lux levels
- Fire alarm alterations to suit the new layout
- Internal upgrades to the demountable classroom, including new flooring, lighting, curtains, internal redecoration, removal of internal walls, adjustment of electrics and replacement of the external door.
External Works & Nursery Play Area
To support the new nursery, GI Sykes’ trusted specialist subcontractor, Sovereign Play Limited, delivered a full external enhancement package, including:
- Supply and installation of a new external canopy
- Provision of new soft‑play surfacing
- Installation of age‑appropriate play equipment
These works created a safe, stimulating outdoor environment supporting early childhood learning and physical development.
Making Good & Compliance
All areas disturbed during the works were fully made good to match the surrounding finishes, with all materials, products and installations delivered in accordance with:
- Current UK Building Regulations
- British and European Standards
- Manufacturer installation requirements
- School safeguarding and accessibility needs
Outcome & Community Impact
The project was successfully completed, enabling Lawley Primary School to open its brand-new nursery at the start of the School Autumn Term, initially welcoming 16 children, with a further five joining later in the year.
Headteacher Carol McQuiggin commented:

The combination of internal remodelling and high‑quality external play provision has significantly enhanced early years capacity, supporting families in the growing Lawley area and contributing to long‑term educational development.
