The NIA Malt House Bridge

Client The National Exhibition Centre

Value £14,000

G I Sykes Ltd was contracted to carry out specialist preparation and application of a protective coating system to the NIA Footbridge in Birmingham city centre.

To gain access to the bridge to carry out the works, G I Sykes hired a canal barge and anchored it in the middle of the canal. Working with its specialist scaffolding contractor it formed a platform from the towpath to the barge and enclosed the working area with monoflex sheet protection to prevent any contamination entering the water.

To prepare the bridge it was shot-blasted all the steelwork to take it back to bare steel, then spray applied a high-build protective coating.

Once one side was completed the scaffold was dismantled and re-erected on the other side to repeat the process. This enabled the company to complete another successful project on time and to the client’s satisfaction with no extra cost over what was originally quoted.
